Some of the questions I get asked often about The Fringe is “Why?”, “Why are you doing this?”, “What do you hope to get out of it?”, “What is your real agenda behind it?”, and “What’s the catch?”
To be honest, those are some fair questions, I am after all, a human writing a blog and photography members of the furry community in a very mainstream setting. To be honest, Taber Heron started out as a furry avatar way back in 2007, only spent a few months like that before I switched and ultimately left SL for 3 years. Before I left SL though I do remember times where many sims wouldn’t allow furs there, or nekkos for that fact. Slowly you started to see more and more nekkos as more people started to find them “cool” and suddenly it was turning into the “In” thing to have a tail and a set of ears, yet to have a non-human body or traits was “weird”. That still doesn’t bring things around to the blog.
A few months ago a few friends of mine Phinneas Vella and Jacks Rhys started to play as a couple of deer. These two gentlemen, no, these two loving partners have been close friends of mine for years now on SL and a comment was made on a Facebook post that was the equivalent of “Ewwww…..why furries?” it kind of bothered me. The two amazing people that are so open and supportive of everything, who have themselves had to overcome obstacles in their RL as well as their SL due to their lifestyle would still be victim to any kind of discrimination or comments about something they choose to do for fun in a virtual environment. It was 2013 for God’s sake….why would I walk around the grid and still see signs saying “No Non-Human Avatars” allowed? Yet to walk inside and seeing it acceptable for people to walk around with tails and ears, or robotic parts, asses the size of 100 pounds of potatoes, tits that look like hot air balloons, or penises the size of a third leg? Because non of those scream “Human” to me.
So it struck me….why not change the direction of my blog to showcase the furs to the world, to show people how sexy, stunning, amazing, creative, and unique that community can be? Why not let them share their own stories about who they are and let people get a peek and realize that behind the digital pixels and parts we are all human, and that’s all that matters. So with that I relaunched The Fringe with this new direction, and must say I’ve been happily surprised with the success of the page since the change in direction and the amount of positive feedback from it as well.
Yes I tend to still get those looks and comments when hanging out in a Fur establishment….”What are you here for pinky?” or “Why are you hanging around here? Not many humans come around.” but that is just going to come with the territory I guess.
Now to answer a few questions I have been asked that I’ll address here:
1. Do you only look for people at Yiff places or others as well? – No, I started to go to yiff places at first because frankly….I could find people there, and find people that are often open enough that they liked to show off their bodies already, thus making my search just so much easier.
2. Do you do shoots of men as well? — I have, just not for the blog, mainly for private portrait shoots. I am not above doing blog posts about males. Some of the people featured so far have been recommended or have come to me, so I’m open to any and all (male, female, herm, etc) who would like to participate.
3. Are you making anything from the pictures? — No, I don’t get paid for anything and in fact often give my “models” (for lack of a better term) copies of their photos when I am done, free of charge.
4. I’m not comfortable being seen naked on the web, do I have to be? — Not at all, in fact I tell anybody who comes to do a photo shoot to bring what they feel they look best in, and it can be several outfits, and that they can wear as much or as little as they feel comfortable doing. This is all about them after all.
I’m glad you have all taken the time to check out The Fringe, and I do enjoy the comments made and try to reply to each one. As always I do encourage you to make comments, whether good or bad about the blog, recommendations for places to visit, people to photograph, etc I love hearing back from you all.
In closing, to Jacks and Phinn, I’d like to thank you two for being the inspiration for this blog, you are two of my dearest friends in SL and I love you both to death. Many happy years to you both. You are truly both amazing and talented people. And that is all that matters.
Jacks and Phinn
Taber.
